There are thousands of reasons why New York City has been deemed the greatest city in the world but one of the reasons we love New York is for it's food. New York is possibly our favorite food destinations in United States. After visiting New York for the first time, we kept going back just for the food. On one of the trips we decided to make a video of the amazing food we had so this post will contain some of the places that might not have been included in the video. Here you go the list of where to eat in New York City.
Di Faras Pizza
The first thing that comes in your mind when you think about New York and food is obviously Pizza. One of the oldest theories about New York City pizza is that the city’s tap water is responsible for its superior taste. We don’t know if it’s true but we sure know that New York style pizza is one of the best style of pizza that you can have and what other place is better to try your first slice of New York Style pizza than the iconic Di Fara. Some say that Di Fara is the best New York style pizza and we completely agree. After waiting in line for 10-15 min (not bad) we got one slice of the regular and one slice of the square pizza. The secret of any outstanding dish depends mostly on the quality of the products that were used to make it and what makes this pizza different from others is the fact that you can taste the high quality products. You can taste the tomatoes, the olive oil and the basil in each bite. I could still feel the burst of delicious olive oil when I took my first bite. Both the square and the regular had same tomato sauce but they still tasted so different from each other. I am not a pizza person but I would surely come all the way back to New York for this pizza. It is one of the best and most memorable pizza experience I have had.
Artichoke Basille’s Pizza
It’s not your regular New York Pizza but still it’s so so good. We got a slice of the artichoke pizza for 5$ but it was pretty big and heavy so me and my husband shared and it was still difficult to finish. We usually prefer thin crust pizza and though this pizza was anything but thin crust we truly enjoyed it. It was so creamy and cheesy and there were chunks of artichokes here and there. Though you couldn’t taste a lot of artichoke, it was so rich and delicious that you couldn’t fault it and plus I guess it’s good for those who don’t like artichokes. This pizza was surely a guilty pleasure.
Joe’s Pizza is another popular institution known for serving classic New York slice. The walls of this place are covered with pictures of celebrities. It was the most crowded pizza place that we went that day but unfortunately it was not the best pizza that we had that day. Compared to Di Fara and Artichoke Basille’s this place lacked in flavor. There was nothing exceptional about the pizza. Would not go here again.
Russ & Daughters
New York equally known for it’s bagels as it’s known for it’s pizza. Layered with smoked fish, cream cheese ,capers these bagels make the best breakfast anyone can hope for. Russ & Daughters has been serving lox, herring, bagels and other specialty foods since 1914, and has been named as “one of the 10 best restaurant in New York” by New York Times. The timeless appeal of the Russ & Daughters Cafe makes it a perfect spot any time of day: whether it’s a for a light nosh, brunch, lunch, cocktails, dinner, or a special occasion. It’s surely a must visit for anyone visiting New York.
When you step in New York the first thing you will notice is all the food carts selling Halal food at every corner. From humble beginnings as a New York City hot dog cart to a world-renowned international restaurant chain, The Halal Guys is defining a new, thriving segment for the restaurant industry: American Halal Food! The Halal Guys legend began in 1990, when the three founding partners opened up a hot dog cart on West 53rd & 6th Avenue in New York City. As business grew, they recognized a huge demand from Muslim cab drivers looking for a halal food meal. That is when the famous platter of chicken and gyro over rice was born. And let’s not forget about the famous white and red sauces! Overall it was good for what it’s worth. We shared one chicken & rice between two people and we were quite full.Who would not like dinner for 7$.We are hard core spicy food lovers and the red sauce was very spicy so be careful when using it. If you work around and wanna have a nice cheap simple lunch this is the place to be and as a tourist it’s tells you what the locals eat on daily basis.
Xi’an Famous Foods
Xi’an Famous Foods is a chain of fast casual restaurants based in New York City that serves authentic Northern Chinese dishes. After having Chinese food at many places in New York, I would say this is not the best that New York has to offer but it’s a good place for introduction to some authentic Chinese food. If you are a Chinese food rookie, this is the place to start in your quest to get some good authentic Chinese food beyond the Americanized general tso chicken. We got the cumin lamb burger, cumin lamb hand pulled noodles and lamb dumplings. And though the place was still very Americanized (food was not spicy even when we ordered very spicy)yet we understood all the possibilities. Though now we know some far better places to get Chinese food in New York, still in a way this place did change our life.
Vanessa’s Dumpling House
The china town in the lower east side is not the best china town in New York City but it is the closest to all the touristy locations. Vanessa’s Dumpling House is a good place to eat some nice and cheap Chinese food. The menu was extensive and there were many great things to try. The dumplings were very cheap and good. We got basil and chicken boiled dumplings, Sesame pancake with peking duck which was like a Chinese sandwich, something we had never had before. We also got the peking duck noodle soup which was good. Overall you get good Chinese at reasonable price.
I just got the chicken empanadas from here and just based on that I would surely like to come here and have a proper meal. The empanadas were the best I have ever had. They were stuffed to the fullest and the stuffing was yummy. I ate the empanadas after they had cooled down and still’ they tasted amazing and that’s an indicator of how good they were.
Xin Fa Bakery
This place has the best Portuguese egg tarts ever. They make the tarts fresh to order and they give it to you hot right out of the oven. Eating these super hot burn your tongue big Portuguese tarts is an experience in itself.Though I must say that the process of getting these tarts is not the easiest. First you have to call them before hand and order your tarts. Second the people who take your order don’t speak alot of English so the second time we went here they wrote our number wrong which created a lot of confusion. Third like most of the Chinese stores they only take cash.forth if you are not Chinese you are gonna stand out. Fifth Getting a parking is difficult, we didn’t find any parking so my husband dropped me and drove around while a went in to get the tarts. But is it worth all the efforts and hassle? I would say for sure.
Queens is like stepping in a completely different country. While roaming the streets you tend to forget that you are still in America and not in some busy street in China. There are so many places to eat here that we only ordered the most popular thing on the menu which was the cumin lamb. The lamb was covered in a red cumin seasoning and it was so good and fatty. The lamb was cooked beautifully , it was tender and just came off the bone. It looked more spicy than it actually was and frankly I would have liked it if it would have been more spicy but other than that it was yum
Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao
So this place features in Michelin guide and though the food was good but I would not call it the best Chinese food I have had in the states. Having said that the food was still good and maybe lets say one of the best xio long bao that I have ever had (and I have had the din tai fung in California). We got pork xio long bao, wontons in spicy peanut sauce, scallion pancake, chive hot pocket and crispy noodles with shredded chicken. The xio long bao was full of soup and was really good, scallion pancakes were just ok not the best we have had, the chive hot pocket was good and stuffed with a lots of chives but the shredded chicken noodle dish was just meh. The dish of the day was 100 percent the wontons in spicy peanut sauce. The peanut sauce was so good that I wanted to drink it, I poured the remainder of the sauce all over the noodles so that they might get a little flavor. They say that don’t expect good service from a Chinese restaurant and this place was a good example of why Chinese restaurants have that reputation. We had no sauces on our table and we didn’t get any with xio long bao. The nice couple on the next table noticed and passed us their bottle of sauce since they were done. When they left the restaurant we had borrow the chili oil and other sauces from that table. Also the table was small and there was not enough space yet they didn’t bother to remove the empty dishes after we were done with a dish. But other than that food was decent, next time I would like to try some of the breakfast dishes.
Golden Shopping Mall
I think one of the best place to get authentic Chinese food without traveling to China is New York. You can get the best and the most authentic Chinese food here if you are a bit courageous and a bit adventurous. Just like most of Asia this place is small, crowded, may be not the most hygienic looking places but believe me they make the yummiest and tastiest food that you can’t get in any top restaurant. There might be some language barrier but everyone speaks the language of good food. There are some really hiden gems in this so called mall. Tian Jin Dumpling House:For some Nice and Juicy Dumplings Lamb Noodle Soup:Milky and full of flavor lamb bone broth. Hand pulled noodles , glass noodles, wood-ear mushrooms, cilantro, and pieces of lamb yum yum and yum.Thank you Anthony Bourdain for finding this place. Xi’an Famous Foods: The original location where it all started
New World Mall Food Court
A slightly modern version of Golden mall the food court is just insane. You get food from all around China and it gets super confusing about what to get. We got dry hot pot from LaoMa MaLa Tang, , Chinese Muslim kebab and Crepe cake from Mojoilla Fresh. We Love hot pot and so this dry hot pot was a fun idea. You choose your protein and veggies and they cook it for you. The kebab was served on a huge skewer which was great. For some reason Asians are good at french pastry. If you have never had crepe cake, you need to try it and the crepe cake we had here was really good.
Ling Kee Beef Jerky
At first you might feel like what is a beef jerky place doing in the list and whats so great about jerky but trust me this place is the best hidden gem ever. We actually don’t even eat beef but they had al kinds of jerkies beef, pork chicken and fish. It was Malaysian style jerky which is completed different than the regular jerky. When you think of jerky you think hard dry and chewy piece of meat but the jerky here are so tender, juicy and fatty and they grill it on charcoal to give a barbecue flavor. Everyone need to try it.
Los Tacos No. 1
It’s one of the most popular location in Chelsea market and we traveled all the way here just for the tacos. At first I got two tacos the grilled cactus (Nopal ) and the grilled chicken (Pollo Asado ). But the tacos are really small and I was not satisfied. The chicken one was good but didn’t like the cactus one at all, maybe cuz it’s acquired taste. So I decided to take the marinated pork taco (Adobada) and this one was the best among the three. I mean the tacos were good but they were not the best tacos I have ever had. Plus they were very small compared to the price. Maybe if I visit Chelsea market then I might eat here again but I would not travel all the way again just for these tacos. If you are from west coast don’t bother coming here at all because it will disappoint you.
For those who don’t know Goa is a popular touristy beach state at the west coast of India. So this place is like a fusion of Indian and Mexican food. It’s Indian laccha paratha served taco style. They offer some interesting flavor combos from Chicken Chorizo Paratha Taco to lamb shoulder taco. It’s interesting and fun. A must try.
Chinatown Ice Cream Factory
Bored with your usual rum and raisin ice cream or feeling adventurous this place has some great Asian flavor ice creams. Like durian, taro, black sesame, thai ice tea and my all time favorite Lychee.
They have a lot of great cupcake options here but tres leches cupcake here is pretty dope. If you can get only one then that’s the one you should get for sure.
New York cheese cake are famous and juniors is popular for it’s cheese cake, so we had to come here. But to put it mildly the cake was horrible. It was not fresh, it was not good and they didn’t even have all the cakes that were on the menu. Big Big disappointment. If you are popular for something at least make them fresh.
Ichiran Ramen is a popular ramen chain restaurant from Japan. They recently opened a branch in New York. We were excited about this place but it was not that great. We have had better ramen on West coast. I would not say it was bad, if it was your first ramen experience than you will surely love it but we have just had a lot of good ramens. Also this place is very expensive for what you get. I think there are many other good places for ramen in New York.
99 Favor Taste
We have had hot pots before but this was our first all you can eat hot pot experience. I love hot pot and it was my birthday and they have great offer for birthdays so we decided to come here. The sauce bar was pretty good and there were a lot of options. We got three broths spicy, herbal and curry and all of them were really good. We got to try a lot of the things that we had never tried before. But the best part was really the service. They really made my birthday special. We got a nice open air table on the terrace, the first surprise was that there were balloons and a card wishing me happy birthday on the table. After eating till our stomachs were bursting they got ice cream with candles, then their mascot came and they sang happy birthday to me. They really went all out to make birthdays special. It’s surely is the best place to celebrate birthday.
It's an Italian marketplace with very high-quality products such as fresh produce, gourmet ingredients, cafes and restaurants serving anything from pizza, pastas, wine, gelato, sea food, etc. It's kind of expensive but the quality of the products is really good. It's definitely worth visiting. If we would have lived in New York we would have visited this place frequently and indulged ourselves with some quality products.
